Review

In the second part of the project I chose to base my characters on The Vampire Diaries. Therefore I researched the television programme and made some hair and make-up designs using the shows main characters as an influence. I also used some elements of the hair and make-up techniques we had learned in lectures as part of my designs. There were some elements of the make-ups that I thought could of gone better, for example the marks on Claudia’s arms which were a bit too harsh. However overall I think my Claudia and Mrs Laderman shoots went quite well and I was pleased with how the photographs looked.

I liked the brief but found it quite difficult to understand sometimes and it was challenging to try and fit Mrs Laderman and Claudia into the story of The Vampire Diaries. I think in the future I would try and think of my designs sooner to give me more time to try different looks and develop my ideas further. I think blogging is something I need to improve on, and I know I could of done a much better job and so I will try in the future to make my blogs better. I had a lot of ideas that are not on my blog as I did not complete the blog posts about them in time so I will try and improve my time management in the future so that my ideas are not wasted.

Mrs Laderman Final Shoot

These are some of the images from my Mrs Laderman Final shoot. The face make-up turned out how I had planned as her complexion was pale and cold and the rest of the make-up was dramatic in comparison, I wanted the make-up such as the shape of the eye shadow to be flattering on my model which I think it was. Therefore Mrs Laderman looks good but you can tell there's something a bit sinister about her. I was pleased with how I blended the make-up down the front of the neck and onto the chest to cover the suntan that my model had. However I should of blended more around the sides of the neck as in some of the profile shots you can see the difference in skin tone. Also I stupidly forgot to cover the suntan on her arms with the same base as the face so it's very obvious that Mrs Laderman is wearing base make-up to make her skin pale where as I wanted it to appear that her skin was that pale cold tone naturally. I also could of powdered the base a little more as I wanted the skin to look a bit dewy but I think in some of the shots it looks more oily than I wanted the skin to be.

I was pleased with the hair because the curls were the shape I wanted them to be and the hair was sleek and shiny so I think Mrs Laderman did look sophisticated. If I was going to change the hair at all I may have done the curls tighter at the top of the hair around the face instead of brushing the top curls out to create waves. This way the face may have been framed slightly better but overall I was pleased with my look.

I wanted Mrs Laderman to look well dressed and a bit glamorous like the main female characters in The Vampire Diaries often do especially on the adverts for the show. That's why I chose this style of dress for my model to wear and I also added a statement necklace to add to this. Although this is not used so much on the show I think it works well to bring the look together and enhances the dress.

I did the shoot outside against a wall as I wanted it to look like Mrs Laderman was creeping around outside Claudia's house. In my design Mrs Laderman can not harm Claudia whilst she is inside her house because although at first Claudia does not think Mrs Laderman is evil, she has watched so many horror shows that she knows how to protect herself and has modified her house so that evil creatures can not get inside. Therefore Mrs Laderman is trying to lure Claudia outside her house so that she can try and change Claudia to be evil just like she is and then when Claudia refuses Mrs Laderman attacks her but Claudia fights back and ultimately defeats Mrs Laderman.

Mrs Laderman Hair:

- Apply heat defense serum to the hair and brush the hair through.

-Section the hair at the front off and section the back of the hair into the layers you are going to use for the curls.

-Using medium tongs curl the bottom sections of the hair and then curl the other sections of the hair working upwards.

-Then curl the front section of hair.

-When the curls have set brush out the curls on the top two layers of the hair and the curls at the front of the face so that the hair becomes wavy instead of curled.

- Break up the bottom layers of curls using your fingers.

-Grip the hair to one side using kriby grips.

-Use hairspray to keep the curls in place.

Mrs Laderman Make-up:

-Moisturise the skin

-Use Kryolan grease based foundation, Illamasqua Matte primer and skin base foundation mixed together and apply all over the skin using a foundation brush. and blend using a buffer brush.

-Apply loose powder using a powder brush.

- Apply Kryolan bronzer to contour the face using a large round brush and a contouring brush.

-Apply Kryolan matte eye shadow in Black pepper, white pepper, caraway and fennel

-Apply black pencil and liquid eyeliner using an angle brush and apply black mascara using disposable wands.

-Apply eyebrow gel using a disposable wand

- Apply Kryolan lipstick LC008 and Mac Shine Lipgloss.

Mrs Laderman Practice

I practised my Mrs Laderman look on myself to help me finalise my design. I think I need to use more contouring to make the look more dramatic and to make the facial features look harsher. I also think the red and grey under the eyes is too un-natural for the look I want to create. I want Mrs Laderman to fit in with the people around her and I think in daily life this eye make-up would catch peoples attention too much

I think the eye make-up looks better here and draws the attention to the eyes and defines them. I think when I used the red the viewers attention would have been more on the red and not the eyes. Also in my final shoot I will use darker eye make-up and more mascara and eyeliner to draw the viewers attention to the eyes more and make the eye area look more dramatic.

I also tried using a more natural lip stick shade as a lot of the characters in The Vampre Diaries do but I feel this is too soft for my Mrs Laderman character and also looks too much like my Claudia design.

Claudia Final Shoot

I was pleased with how the make-up turned out on the final shoot. The colour of the eye make-up goes better with the colour of the dress as I hoped it would and because i did the bruising and wounds darker they show up better in the photographs. I maybe should of done the eye shadow a bit darker too so that it showed up more and perhaps the same with the lipstick as the lip shape is lost slightly. The hair worked how i had hoped it would and I managed to cover the hair grips and create the shape of curls that I wanted. I perhaps should of made the hair a bit more dishevelled to make it look like Claudia had been fighting and running away from Mrs Laderman and was therefore more windswept.

I chose this dress for my model to wear as I think the style and colour would fit in well with the Vampire Diaries. I think the look would have been better without the belt but the dress was a bit big for my model as her size was sold out so I had to get a size bigger and therefore the belt was needed as the dress was a bit too shapeless without it. I chose to add the black cardigan as I felt the dress looked a bit too mature without it and Claudia is supposed to be a young quite innocent women.

Hair:

- Use heat defense serum and cream on the hair and brush through.

-Section the hair so that there is a side parting and the hair around the face is section off. Also section the back of the hair into the layers you are going to curl the hair in.

-Curl the hair starting with the bottom layers and pin into place. Use medium sized tongs to do this and make sure the pieces of hair you are curling are not too big.

-When the curls have set unpin them apart from the top layer.

-Backcomb and curl the sections of hair around the face and then pin them in place with kirby grips.

-Then unpin the top layer of curls and place them so that they hide the grips.

-Use your fingers to break up the curls and make them aa bit looser and dishevelled.

-Use hairspray to keep the curls in place and smooth any flyaway hairs.

Make up:

- Mix together Illamasqua Matte Primer, skin base and Kryolan grease based foundation and apply all over the skin using a foundation and buffer brush.

- Apply Kryolan bronzer and eyeshadow in white pepper and caraway to make the skin look dull and hollow, focusing on the cheekbones and under the eyes.

- Apply Beauty uk eyeshadow pallette no5 twillight using the blues, black and white tones.

-Apply black pencil and liquid eyeliner and brow gel using an angled brush and disposable wands to apply.

-Apply Kryolan lipstick in LC142 and Mac Shine lipgloss.

-Apply Kryolan Supracolor  to create bruising and marks then use loose powder over the top to set.

-Also use bronzer on the arms to look like dirt.

-Apply fake blood to create the wounds.
